World War One fighter pilots are not usually the subject of choice for online slots – least of all German ones. Well, the Red Baron breaks the mould, focusing on Manfred Richthofen, reportedly the best airborne ‘ace’ of any nation at a time when people were fighting in biplanes. This slot is mostly the plain and simple fare you might expect from Aristocrat. At the same time there are a couple of interesting additions, in the form of ‘missions’ and the 243-ways ‘reel power’ setup.

The graphics are very blocky and plain, all with retro images of the time such as a wooden radio cabinet and target. These really feel like they were just transplanted from an old mechanical slot. Simple upgrades for the design would make a big difference to this and to many other Aristocrat slots. Other than some music during the intro and special sounds during the missions game, the beeps and clicks are from the same library as the other Aristocrat slots. At least the missions, which gives you points for each plane collected (shot down) gives the Red Baron something different. You will have the potential for a big pay-out, especially with the front view of the biplane sometimes appearing stacked on the reels.

There are no win-lines in the Red Baron. This uses the ‘Reel Power’ system, which lets you select the number of reels to play and then allows all combinations from left to right (starting in the left hand reel) to be winning lines. It makes little sense to reduce the reels for this, which gives you 243 potential winning combinations for each spin. This will result in a lot of wins on occasion, especially when symbols are stacked. You can spin for 20c in this game, right up to $100. Two symbols share the top spot in terms of the pay-outs. These are a portrait of Richthofen himself, and his red plane. You get 1500 coins for 5 of either – though the Red Baron himself is just ahead with 1000 coins for 4, compared to 500 from the plane. The portrait of a lady, barrage balloon, dog and then the radio make up the rest of the unique winning symbols, playing cards are also included. There are two special symbols. The first is a medal, which only appears on the middle reel. This doubles any win it is a part of. It substitutes for everything, including the scatter / bonus symbol. Targets kick of both the mission and free spins games; these appear on the middle 3 reels only.
There are two interlinked features, both of which kick off when you hit 3 of the target symbols in the middle 3 reels (or 2 and the wild (medal)). First you get a ‘mission’. Here you choose from a higher number of planes with a big multiplier of your triggering win, or a lower number with a smaller multiplier. As the bonus round plays, you collect planes. The concept here is that you can take a smaller win regularly, or gamble and go for a bigger one. Whichever option you choose, if you go get 25 or more planes during your spins, you get 40x your triggering bet. The free spins has no different symbols or multipliers, the medal (doubles wins) is still involved on the reels, and the 243 ways setup can potential give you a lot of winning combinations.
This is actually quite an entertaining game to play, though the graphics and sounds are really not designed to help. The smaller number planes for the missions seemed very easy to complete (your mileage may vary obviously). This extra feature did add an extra element to the game which is missing from a lot of the Aristocrat slots. With a graphics brush up, this could make the grade as a slot to recommend.
